Hungarian player wins Puskás Award in FIFA gala – VIDEO
Hungarian football player Dániel Zsóri has won the FIFA Puskas Award granted to the scorer of the most spectacular goal of the year.
The prestigious prize was presented to the 18-year-old striker at the Best FIFA Football Awards gala held in Milan on Monday night.
As a player of Debrecen, Zsóri scored a crucial goal with a superb overhead kick in the last minute of a match against Ferencváros, the current champion, on February 16.
“It is a great honour for me to be the first Hungarian to win the award named after Hungary’s all-time greatest football player,” Zsóri said at the ceremony.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who did not attend this year’s gala, congratulated him on his Facebook page:
“The Puskás Award has returned. Congratulations, Dániel Zsóri.”
Ferenc Puskás (1927-2006) was probably the best-known Hungarian in the world in the second half of the 20th century, a prolific scorer who captained Hungary’s legendary Golden Team of the early 1950s and went on to establish a brilliant international career at Real Madrid.
The Puskás Award was founded in 2009 under a Hungarian initiative.
